About Us

Our Vision

Glasgow has had continuous job growth since the mid 1990s, and there are thousands of job opportunities, across every sector.

This dynamic picture is quite different from Glasgow’s situation 15 years ago, and it is forecast to continue for the foreseeable future.

There are still a large number of people however who aren’t aware of this picture.

Some individuals don’t see themselves in work and some staff are unaware of the scope of job opportunities for their clients. Yet many of our citizens want to work, and the possibility of work does exist.

For example, the Equal Access / Glasgow Homelessness Network study of homeless people found that 66% of homeless people had work experience, only 8% were in work, but 68% wanted to work. Yet few homeless people ever had job aspirations discussed with them.

Now GHN are working with Equal Access to roll out an employability training programme for workers in this area, so that the first steps in the process towards employment can be taken. We find that when front line staff know where they can refer their client for further help and advice, they are more open to initiating the discussion.

Vision for Full Employment

Together the partners are working towards a vision of full employment for the city with:

  • Health & Social Care organisations having the confidence and knowledge to refer individuals for training and employability support.
  • Training and Employability providers understanding how to work with a more diverse range of clients and where and how to access specialist health and social care support when necessary.
  • Agencies with specialist expertise in areas such as childcare, money advice, debt, or care groups collaborating with more mainstream services offering employability support and guidance.
  • New ways of working to be supported and reinforced by working in collaboration with a diverse range of partners.
